Questions About Our Swords
The most famous samurai sword is the katana. The katana evolved from the tachi (long sword) in the 14th century and was traditionally used by Japanese samurai.
Nowadays, the term “katana” is also used as a general term for Japanese sword. Modern katana are also called shinken katana (“real sword”).
You want to Buy a Real Samurai Katana? Then you are exactly right in our store!
By default, we only deliver all High-End Katana with a certificate of authenticity.
Concretely, this means: All katana with a 1095 carbon steel blade, honsanmai blade, kobuse blade or tamahagane blade (also custom katana) will be delivered including certificate. All katana with a cheaper blade (T10, 1060, 1040, wood, …) will be delivered without certificate.
A full tang katana is a samurai sword in which the tang (erl) extends the entire length of the handle. The blade and the handle are thus made of a single piece of metal and are therefore robust, solid and strong. Swords for practical use should always be full tang, unlike decorative katana.

Folded steel, stainless steel, carbon steel, T10 steel – it can be confusing at first glance. Find out about the different steel types of katana and sword blades in our Katana Wiki.
Here are some interesting articles regarding blade steel, clay tempering, hamon and Damascus steel:
Originally, folding the steel resulted in a harder blade, but nowadays the process of folding has no effect on the hardness and cutting ability of a katana.
Nowadays, the folding of the steel has a purely visual value, because the folding creates a beautiful hada (grain pattern) on the blade.
A clay tempered blade is sustainably sharp even in rough use. The blade of the katana in this special process called Differential Hardening or Clay Tempering is painted with clay before heating, which creates a thin layer of clay on the edge, this ensures rapid cooling and thus maximum hardening of the edge (hasaki). A thicker layer of clay is applied to the rest of the blade, resulting in slower cooling. This process creates a softer, more resistant steel that allows the katana to absorb shock without breaking.
For more information on clay tempering, check out our exciting article “What Is a Clay Tempered Blade?”
In Japanese katana blacksmithing, the hamon (literally “blade pattern”) is a visual effect created by the clay tempering process on the katana’s blade.
You can find more information about the Hamon in our article “Hamon – the Temper Line of a Katana Blade“.
A Bo-Hi (also called groove / blood groove) is a narrow indentation that runs the length of the blade. The reasons for a blood rill were:
- aesthetic reasons
- reduced weight
- more agility when wielding the sword
Tameshigiri is the Japanese art of test cutting. Tameshigiri tests both the cutting skills of the samurai and the quality of the katana sword.
